The city possesses, in the Church of Saint Peter, an exhibition space with significant spatial potential, located at a well-connected, central urban site. This study demonstrates how the space can be transformed into a contemporary stage for art through minimal functional additions and sensitive architectural interventions that respect the historical fabric of the building.
A central element of the concept is the introduction of a surrounding gallery, which opens up a wide range of new possibilities for usage and exhibition pedagogy, while also contributing to the spatial structuring of the interior.
The most significant structural shortcoming of Saint Peter is addressed through the addition of a foyer, which accommodates essential supporting functions such as cloakroom, an additional assembly room, and a concierge. Serving as orientation elements, so-called “guiding markers” – artistic objects – draw attention to the new entrance area and guide visitors from Wiener Straße directly to it.
