On the theme “Uncertain Terrain” — as part of the SOHO Ottakring art festival — a sculpture made of 3,615 recycled PET water bottles at Yppenplatz makes water consumption and the worldwide increase of plastic waste visible and tangible.

The two discs of the sculpture create a forward-moving dynamic together with the surrounding space. This effect is achieved by the characteristic tilt of the bottles. The walls consist of 28 modules, which were prefabricated in our office workshop and then quickly lifted, connected, and glued onto the steel substructure on site. The color pattern, based on common mineral water bottles, was digitally generated.

In 2012, the average Austrian household used 130 liters of water per day — equal to 86 bottles of 1.5 liters. Vienna has 854,000 households, most of which commonly buy bottled mineral water. Per capita consumption was 89 liters in 2010. Fifteen Austrian mineral water brands sold a total of 702 million liters that year, with sales and plastic waste both rising. – In collaboration with Beate Bartlmä
