Old and new are separated by a glass connection, which allows a glimpse into the garden while preserving the ivy-clad, historic façade. The clients required a dedicated area for the children, but the long-established garden was to remain undisturbed.
The building volume was positioned within the side setback of the existing turn-of-the-century house to minimize the footprint on the garden. This resulted in the minimal dimensions for the extension, with a width of just 2.60 meters
Separated from the existing building by a 40 cm wide glass gap, the new volume accommodates a generous foyer as well as the children’s area. Its outward form, with carefully positioned openings, responds to the surrounding neighborhood: outward views are blocked, while the perspective towards the garden is revealed only within the interior. The cantilevered upper floor on the street side creates a protective canopy for the newly designed entrance area.
At the rear, a terrace recess ensures that the western sun continues to reach the existing terrace of the old building. The prefabricated wood-steel structure not only facilitated a short construction period but also enabled a resource-efficient execution in line with sustainable circular economy principles.
