The project aimed at inner-city densification and the sustainable creation of living space through timber construction, with timber construction and circular economy being the focal points on both adjacent sites. The street-facing façade of the new building creates a modern contrast to the neighboring structures. The attic levels feature spacious duplex apartments with roof terraces. Towards the courtyard, the apartments open up with balconies that offer views of the green inner courtyard. The studio house in the courtyard is a green oasis of tranquility with its own garden, inviting creative work.
Due to the pursuit of sustainable building and the short construction time, the upper floors were constructed using prefabricated solid timber construction. The site area was not completely built upon; instead, open spaces were created to allow for infiltration. The areas above the garage were designed as green inner courtyards, and all flat roofs are green roofs. These measures create a pleasant microclimate in the heart of the city and slow down rainwater runoff. The aim of the renovation was to update the existing apartments to modern standards without losing the qualities of the historic structure. In the existing building, the addition of balconies and floor-to-ceiling glazing created a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Both attic floors were constructed using a timber-steel lightweight construction method. The buildings are equipped with a photovoltaic system, and wood waste from the client’s timber processing business is used for hot water production and heating.
